Forgot to add that to see stains it is important to have the room very dark as the stains are only pale. Also dried stains work best as it is the urine crystals which reflect light not the wet urine.

We bought the more expensive light as we knew that we would have trouble spotting our stains on a shag carpet and laminate floor. I'm not convinced it was worth the extra expense in our case. The laminate flooring was mostly too reflective of light in general to see the pale stains and the shag also reflected light due to some of the materials used in the shag. The carpet was also a problem as I suspect the urine has soaked through to the underlay. It did come in extremely helpful when spotting splashe urine on the furniture and wall which we had not expected and so could more effectively clean. It was also very useful in pointing out to our boys what poor aim they have for the toilet and how much they need to brush up on their cleaning skills!
